Southern Florida Awarded $2.2 million for Coastal Wetlands

The South Florida Ecosystem Wetlands V project aims to enhance the hydrology of 998 acres and permanently secure 72 acres through fee-simple acquisition. The project entails the enhancement of existing freshwater wetlands on a state property of critical importance to the South Florida Ecosystem and the protection of an existing private impounded mangrove marsh wetland in the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) for the benefit of many wetland-dependent species.

A restored dike for Peacock’s Pocket impoundment at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge

Florida has some iconic waterfowl hunting areas, which are specifically managed to provide habitat for overwintering waterfowl, especially during hunting season. Peacock’s Pocket at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge near Cape Canaveral is perhaps the most well-known. This area is an integral part of the Atlantic Flyway and attracts a tremendous number of migratory birds each year. The Refuge contains an extensive impoundment system to control water levels and habitat quality. The condition of the dikes surrounding these impoundments is critical to operations.

Florida's Ducks

The Prairie Pothole Region is critical to Florida waterfowl hunters.

A significant portion of Florida's annual duck harvest migrates to us from the Prairie Pothole Region, also referred to as "the duck factory.'

The Prairie Pothole Region is DU's #1 conservation focus area. In addition Florida benefits from DU's Southeastern Coastal Plain conservation work as the organization continues to conserve critical waterfowl habitat in the Sunshine State.

There is no waterfowl conservation organization that represents the needs of Florida waterfowl hunters like Ducks Unlimited.

Our vital conservation work provides support to our migration both on the breeding grounds and here at home.

With your help, we will preserve our waterfowl hunting heritage through habitat conservation of these areas vital to the Florida migration and harvest.
