Heritage preserve dedicated in South Carolina

DU Regional Biologist Emily Purcell recently attended a dedication event for the Wateree River Heritage Preserve Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Richland County, South Carolina. The WMA will provide hunting, fishing, and general outdoor recreational access to the public.

DU partnered with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (DNR), South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Haile Gold Mine, Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Act, South Carolina Department of Archives and History, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to create the WMA as part of the Haile Gold Mine Mitigation Project.

Prior to the WMA's establishment, DU held an easement on property at Cook's Mountain. Through the Haile Gold Mine Mitigation Plan, acreage was added to this easement, protecting the entirety of Cook's Mountain. The South Carolina DNR then acquired ownership of the area through the mitigation plan and included it in the WMA.

DU engineering staff worked with refuge staff from throughout the project, developing and implementing a plan to improve the management capabilities of the impoundments with the Savannah NWR Complex.

Expanding Youth Hunting Opportunities in the Low Country

“Thanks to donations, the youth and adult guides were able to hunt and enjoy a pancake breakfast and snacks during the hunt, and everyone left with a DU swag pack,” said South Carolina DU State Chairman Alex Mozingo. “Upon arriving at the site, hunters were given a safety talk. Each pair drew for their hunting blind, and then it was time to hunt. Youth were paired with an experienced hunter, often a parent, in the blind. It was an amazing opportunity for both experienced youth and youth new to waterfowling to come out and hunt birds that had not been pressured, learn about conservation, and how important it is to respect wildlife and provide quality habitat for them.”
