Ducks Unlimited has partnered with Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge and the Friends of Iroquois on a 1,000 acre forested wetland enhancement at the refuge. As part of DU's enhancement efforts, we are restoring 10 acres of forested wetland.

To complete the forest restoration, the Friends of Iroquois and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Serve are seeking volunteer help with the tree planting efforts. More than 3,000 new trees need to go in the ground, and this is a great opportunity to get your hands dirty and help with a cooperative wetland restoration project.

About 40 volunteers on May 15 planted more than 1,000 trees. A second planting event has been scheduled:

  • When: 9 a.m. Saturday, June 4. Planting will continue until early afternoon.
  • Where: Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge office, 1101 Casey Rd, Basom, NY 14013 (we will car pool to the site).
  • Items you will need: Bring personal work gloves, extra shovels, bug spray, sunscreen, hat, work clothes, boots and other personal items you may need.
  • Food: Drinks and snacks will be provided, with hotdogs for lunch.

The project was funded through a North American Wetland Conservation Act small grant.

Bring friends and family to help support this partnership effort to restore 10-acre of critical forested wetland habitat - more people means less work.

RSVP with the names of those attending to Sarah Fleming, sfleming@ducks.org, or Brandy Neveldine, bneveldine@ducks.org.
