Forever a Teacher: Linda White’s Gift to Ducks Unlimited

Linda Anne White, a lifelong educator and passionate environmentalist, left a profound legacy for waterfowl conservation and wetland education through her generous donation to Ducks Unlimited. Raised in a small town just miles from Tennessee’s famous Reelfoot Lake, Linda grew up surrounded by the rhythms of the land and a family with a deep appreciation for the natural world. Alongside her brother, Dr. James White, and her other siblings, she learned the value of hard work on their family farm.

Though she later moved to Atlanta and pursued a career teaching biology and natural sciences, she never forgot the lessons learned in those early years. Her brother noted that her Atlanta home, which was located in the heart of the busy city, was a sanctuary for local wildlife—from bright orange monarch butterflies to cottontail rabbits. Her lessons were always rooted in her fascination and love for science and the natural world.

Linda lived modestly but invested well. Upon retirement, she traveled to every continent except Antarctica, forever a student of the world’s wonders and its wildlife.

Though Linda was not a hunter, she was surrounded by a family of hunters and always valued their commitment to conservation. In her later years, after some disenchantment with other environmental groups, Linda took a closer look at DU, an organization that her brother and father had long supported. What impressed her most about DU was its mission-driven focus and its dedication to bringing people together for a common cause. “She saw DU as an organization that unified people,” James said. “It brings all sorts of individuals together—not in division but in shared purpose.”

Linda White’s commitment to education lives on through a special exhibit at Discovery Park of America in Union City, Tennessee.

Upon her passing, Linda’s estate provided a significant donation to Ducks Unlimited, some of which was designated to support a special exhibit at the nationally renowned Discovery Park of America in Union City, Tennessee. The rest will go to benefit DU’s highest conservation priorities. The DU-partnered Duck, Duck, Goose: Waterfowl of the Mississippi Flyway exhibit at Discovery Park offers visitors immersive, interactive displays; life-sized models; and storytelling stations that convey the importance of wetlands and waterfowl conservation. True to her lifelong commitment to education, Linda’s support will now bring the lessons of wetlands and waterfowl to future generations of outdoor enthusiasts and conservationists.
