ARTHUR, Iowa - June 22, 2015 - Flint Hills Resources recently donated $10,000 to Ducks Unlimited's Living Lakes Initiative, a program designed to enhance, restore and protect shallow lakes and wetlands that feed into larger waterways from central Iowa to northern Minnesota.
"Wetlands provide habitat for countless waterfowl migrating through Iowa, as well as hundreds of other species of birds. Wetlands also protect and prevent erosion and flooding, and serve as the source of much of our country's water supply," said Mike Shannon, a Ducks Unlimited regional biologist. "For more than 75 years it has been the mission of Ducks Unlimited to conserve these habitats. We are grateful for the widespread community support that allows us to continue our conservation legacy."
Ducks Unlimited will use the funds to enhance projects such as the Bays Branch wetlands in Guthrie County, the Marble-Hottes Lakes Wetland Complex in Dickson County, the Maynard Reese Waterfowl Production Area in Kossuth County and other wetland and waterfowl habitats in both the Arthur and Menlo areas.
This Living Lakes Initiative project is set to take place over the next 12 to 18 months. This most recent donation represents the continuation of a partnership between Flint Hills Resources and Ducks Unlimited that began more than 30 years ago in Minnesota.
"Ducks Unlimited's conversation efforts not only provide critical habitat for wildlife, they also provide Iowans with great outdoor places for hunting, fishing, sight seeing and other outdoor activities," said Brian Bence, plant manager at the Flint Hills Resources Arthur ethanol plant.. "We are pleased to support the organization in helping restore Iowa's wetlands and shallow lakes."
