Purpose: To replace a water control structure on Lake Guana that had deteriorated, resulting in the expansion of dense cattail stands. DU funds were used to contract an aquatic weed cutter and buy herbicide to control cattail expansion. In addition, 10 water control structures were installed on six inland ponds adjacent to the lake. Pond levels have been routinely managed to enhance the growth of desirable waterfowl food plants including soft-stem bulrush, smartweed, wild millet, and a variety of foxtail grasses. Habitat restoration on Guana WMA will provide excellent wintering food and cover for numerous duck species including lesser scaup, ring-necked ducks, blue-winged teal, wigeon, and pintail. This project is managed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to maintain high quality wetland habitat for wintering and resident waterfowl, while providing public hunting opportunities.
