An invasive species is a non-native plant, animal, pathogen, or other organism that causes harm to the environment, the economy, or human health. In simple terms, a species becomes invasive when it is outside its natural range and causes damage.

That definition has two important parts. First, the species is not native to the place where it is found. Second, it causes harm. A garden plant from another continent is not automatically invasive. The problem begins when that species spreads, outcompetes native plants and wildlife, changes habitats, or negatively impacts people and communities.

People often use non-native and invasive as if they mean the same thing, but they do not. Some non-native species stay in gardens, farms, ponds, or aquariums without spreading into natural areas. Others escape, reproduce quickly, and become difficult to control once established.

Invasive Species Examples

Hydrilla. Hydrilla is a submerged aquatic plant found in lakes, rivers, canals, and springs. It can grow into thick mats near the surface, blocking sunlight, reducing oxygen, crowding out native aquatic plants, and interfering with boating, fishing, and flood-control systems.

Water hyacinth. Water hyacinth is a floating plant with rounded leaves and purple flowers. It can multiply quickly and cover open water, limiting navigation, shading native plants, and reducing habitat quality for fish, birds, and other wetland wildlife.

Melaleuca. Melaleuca is an invasive tree from Australia that was introduced in Florida as an ornamental tree, but quickly transformed wetlands. It can form dense stands in wetlands, displace native plants, alter fire behavior, and reduce the open marsh and wet prairie habitat that many native species depend on.

Brazilian pepper. Brazilian pepper is a fast-spreading shrub or small tree that invades coastal areas, hammocks, pinelands, and wetland edges. Its dense growth can shade out native plants and alter habitat structure along shorelines and conservation lands.

Burmese python. Burmese pythons are large constrictor snakes established in the Everglades ecosystem. They prey on native mammals, birds, and reptiles and have become a high-profile example of how released or escaped nonnative animals can disrupt Florida food webs.

Why Invasive Species Matter for Wetlands and Waterfowl

Wetlands depend on variety. A healthy marsh includes open water, submerged plants, emergent plants, mudflats, insects, fish, amphibians, and seeds. Waterfowl use that mix for feeding, nesting, resting, and raising young. When an invasive species takes over, the wetland can become less diverse and less productive.

Dense invasive plants can replace native food plants and reduce access to shallow water. Invasive animals can remove vegetation, stir up sediment, or compete with native species. Over time, these changes affect the food chain. Less plant diversity can mean fewer insects and seeds. Less habitat structure can mean fewer places for ducklings and other young wildlife to hide from predators.

Prevention is usually easier and less expensive than control. Once an invasive species becomes established, managers may need years of monitoring, removal, and restoration to reduce its impact.
