February
Happy February!

Personally, I always liked February. To me, it just meant that we were that much closer to Spring! By now, I am sure much of that holiday stress has worn off and everyone has settled into this new year. In years past, I never really gave much thought to new year's, resolutions, and the sort. I just carried on as if life was just one big continuation. This year, however, I can't seem to escape the saying "New Year, New You." It has literally been everywhere I turn. After ignoring this phrase for the better part of January, I started to think, what would a "new year, new me" look like?  Would I change my hair? Would I travel more? Would I stick to a work out routine and watch what I eat? Then I thought, what if this "New Year, New You" wasn't about me at all. What if this concept was a challenge to ourselves to realize that everyday is a new day. We choose how and with who we want to spend our time with. We shape how our friends, families, neighbors, and even strangers view us, through our words, but back them up with our actions. So, this year, instead of a resolution, I am making a proclamation. To enjoy everyday more, even the stressful ones, to stay in touch with family more often, and to be a better role model and example to those around me. To this new year, I am bringing Hope, Courage, and Kindness. What will you bring?

Mad River DU Chapter "Sportsman's Night Out"

Saturday, April 6, 2019

Ducks Unlimited (DU) is now accepting applications for the DU National Scholarship Program offering graduating high school seniors who are DU members the opportunity to advance their education.

DU will award 61, one-time scholarships to eligible applicants at the following levels:

– 50 Varsity Scholarships at $500 each
– 10 Conservation Scholarships at $1,000 each
– 1 National Scholarship of $10,000

The online application is now open and will close on March 1, 2019. Applicants will need to provide their high school transcript, DU member/volunteer history, a resume including a list of any service or academic awards received and a letter of recommendation highlighting your involvement with DU and commitment to conservation. In addition, applicants will be required to write a 500-word essay describing how your outdoor experiences have contributed to your understanding of the importance of wetlands. All applications will be reviewed by DU's National Scholarship Selection Committee and recipients will be chosen based on the merits of those submissions.

The list of scholarship recipients will be sent to all applicants in April 2019 with awarded checks released to the student's college or university. Recipients will be recognized in Ducks Unlimitedmagazine, and the national scholarship winner will be announced at the DU National Convention.

As of today, we are proud to announce that DU representatives have been working closely with the next generation of conservationists in New York, and through their hard work and determination there are now two active high school chapters, which are also the only high school chapters in the entire Northeastern part of the  U.S.

There are three components to the chapter:

  • Community--- helping to educate people regarding Ducks unlimited and its collective mission.
  • Conservation—primarily building and installing Wood duck boxes for local habitat enhancement
  • Fundraising—it’s never too early to learn that things cost money. These high school kids are funding out that conservation is not an inexpensive endeavor. This raffle is their fundraising component.
