Duck Numbers Remain Strong

Pond Counts Approach Record Levels


The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service released its preliminary report on breeding ducks and habitats, based on surveys conducted in May and early June. Total duck populations were estimated at 45.6 million breeding ducks on the surveyed area. This estimate represents an 11 percent increase over last year's estimate of 40.9 million birds and is 35 percent above the 1955-2010 long-term average. This was only the fifth time in the survey's history that the total duck population exceeded 40 million.

Don't ask me where we are. But if this isn't the middle of nowhere, it's got to be nearby. Martin Hesby and his partner, Tyson Keller, insist scouting is critical to success. And they've got proof. "Just watch," Hesby says as midafternoon begins to turn into early evening. "You're going to be stunned. I can almost guarantee that."

Tropical Duck with Wild Rice

Ingredients
  • 3 or 4 mallard (or other puddle duck) breasts
  • 6 ounces frozen orange juice concentrate, thawed
  • ½ cup water
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 (6-ounce) packages dried mixed tropical fruit
  • 1½ cups spiced rum
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • ½ cup slivered almonds
  • hot cooked wild rice
