AMES, Iowa – June 1, 2016 – Flint Hills Resources Biofuels and Ingredients business has continued its support of Ducks Unlimited through a $10,000 pledge to benefit waterfowl and conservation in Iowa.
This is the second gift to Ducks Unlimited in Iowa from Flint Hills Resources. The company also donated $10,000 last year. The pledge supports Ducks Unlimited's Living Lakes Initiative, which enhances, restores and protects shallow lakes and wetlands that feed into larger waterways from central Iowa to northern Minnesota.
"Wetlands offer numerous benefits to wildlife and people, from healthy habitat to clean drinking water and recreational opportunities," said Mike Shannon, Ducks Unlimited regional biologist for Iowa. "Ducks Unlimited is grateful for Flint Hills' partnership. Because of this support, we can fulfill our mission."
Ducks Unlimited will leverage the $10,000 gift to obtain $1 million in public grants and an additional $150,000 of private funds provided by DU members and major philanthropists. The donation also supports Ducks Unlimited's Rescue Our Wetlands $2 billion continental fundraising campaign.
This Living Lakes Initiative project will continue the next 12 to 18 months. This recent donation continues the partnership between Flint Hills Resources and Ducks Unlimited that began more than 30 years ago in Minnesota. Since 1985, Flint Hills Resources has contributed more than $800,000 to Ducks Unlimited.
"Maintaining wetlands and other critical habitats for waterfowl and other wildlife is an essential part of protecting our environment and conserving our natural resources for future generations," said Darrell Birck, vice president of Flint Hills Resources Biofuels and Ingredients. "We are pleased to support Ducks Unlimited in its mission to preserve these vital assets."
