2016 National Convention Tours

Tour information for DU's 79th National Convention in Anchorage, Alaska

Please note that all tours have a 20 person minimum. Tours that do not reach the minimum by May 10 will be cancelled.

11 hours | 6:30am - 5:30pm

Feed your adventurous side on a jet boat cruise through Denali State Park in Devil's Canyon. Experience the thrill of the ultimate Alaskan river tour as you travel 130 miles through Devil's Gorge and the whitewater that surrounds the majestic scenery of Denali and the Alaska Range. See wildlife (if they aren't shy) and the grandeur of Denali. During the trip, you will stop to see how early settlers lived in the "bush" of Alaska at the turn of the century. Hear Naturalists describe the wildowers and plants that grow along the river. Dress warmly in layers and wear comfortable walking shoes, and be sure to remember your camera for those amazing photo opportunities. Breakfast and a box lunch is provided. Space on the tour is limited to 55 people per day, so register now.

Explore Alaska's largest city. On your visit to the downtown area, you will see why it is called the city of flowers. You will visit Earthquake Park to learn about the 1964 Earthquake, and Lake Hood where more than 200 floatplanes take off and land daily.

Looking for a more relaxing adventure? Travel via motor coach to the Alaska Railroad for a 3.5 hour scenic train ride to Spencer Glacier in the remote Chugach Mountains where you will board ras and oat two hours among the icebergs of Spencer Lake down to the Placer River. Your professional river guide will introduce you to the wildlife that may decide to come along on the tour! e tour provides a box lunch, raingear and rubber boots, but remember to dress in layers and bring a camera. Space on the tour is limited to 100 people per day (7 to 8 people per raft), so book your spot today. Please provide your shoe size.

9.5 hours | 10:00am - 7:30pm

Travel via motor coach to Whittier, a historical landmark established by the U.S. Army during World War II as a secret port. Discover the secrets of Whittier as you arrive at the Gateway to Prince William Sound. Once in Whittier, you will board the Klondike Express, the fastest catamaran in Alaska, to explore the serenity of Esther Passage. View the majestic alpine and tidewater glaciers in College and Harriman Fjords along with a variety of wildlife. A camera is a must. Be sure to wear layers, bring a jacket and a hat. Lunch is included on board.

4.5 hours | ‡8:00am - 12:30pm

Travel via motor coach to Happy Trails Kennel located in Willow, the "Mushing Capital of Alaska." Happy Trails Kennel is the home of Martin Buser, four time Iditarod Champion, and his family. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by an Iditarod Musher and escorted into the Visitors Center for a virtual trip on the Iditarod Trail from Anchorage to Nome. Hear anecdotal stories of life on the trail and history of the Iditarod. You will see a mockup of camp life and learn how the real athletes, the dogs, are cared for and outfitted for the elements while on the trail. Next, you see a mushing demonstration with a team of dogs and have time to cuddle with the puppies. Be sure to bring your camera for some great photo opportunities and wear comfortable shoes.
