VANCOUVER, Wash. – Oct. 23, 2020 – The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) named Ducks Unlimited’s (DU) Pacific Northwest Field Office, headquartered in Vancouver, Wash., the state agency’s Partner Organization of the Year.
“The scope of Ducks Unlimited Pacific Northwest Field Office’s work is truly impressive,” said WDFW Director Kelly Susewind. "From waders on the water helping with habitat restoration projects to mobilizing financial and human resources for conservation projects alongside a wide variety of other partners, we know we can count on Ducks Unlimited and its members to live their commitment to waterfowl and waterfowl habitats."
DU Pacific Northwest staff members were specifically recognized for their work to purchase and restore wildlife areas throughout the state including Leque Island, Cherry Valley, the Elk River Unit, the Winchester Reserve Desert Unit and the Channeled Scablands.
“This is a tremendous testament to the hard work and dedication shown by the entire Ducks Unlimited team that works in Washington state,” said Mark Biddlecomb, DU’s Western Region director of operations. “Our staff in the Pacific Northwest are extremely dedicated wildlife professionals and the WDFW is one of our best partners in the state. In the last two years, we have conserved 2,300 acres on WDFW lands, including acquisition of the 1,670-acre Elk River Unit, which increased public hunting and other recreational opportunities.”
In 1987, DU conducted its first project with WDFW at Chehalis Wildlife Area, and since that time Ducks Unlimited has impacted almost 70,000 acres in the state. The partnership has improved habitats for waterfowl, salmon and other wildlife and increased opportunities afield for hunters, anglers and other outdoor enthusiasts.
“DU’s staff across North America work tirelessly and often don’t get the recognition they deserve,” said DU CEO Adam Putnam. “This award speaks volumes to the passion the Pacific Northwest team has for waterfowl, wildlife and our natural resources. They are on the front lines, every day, fueling our mission to fill the skies with waterfowl. It’s because of their work, and the work of volunteers, staff and partners all across the nation, that DU is the greatest wetlands and waterfowl conservation organization in North America.”
