Youth Waterfowl Hunting Workshop Aug. 17

Children 16 and under are invited to a free youth waterfowl hunting workshop Friday, Aug. 17, 2018 at the Ducks Unlimited office at 2525 River Road in Bismarck. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, with sign-in beginning at 8:30 a.m.

"This workshop presents a unique opportunity for kids to learn about ducks, waterfowl hunting and conservation," said Trenton Hieb, DU regional biologist and volunteer workshop instructor. "It’s important for kids to understand the outdoors, wetlands and how they can participate in a healthy activity that benefits them and their community. Without this exposure, we run the risk of losing support for hunting and conservation from future generations. It’s our goal to educate and recruit as many new hunters and conservationists as possible in a fun and educational setting."

Participants will learn the skills to safely enjoy waterfowl hunting. Activities include duck identification, decoy spreads, hunting gear, an introduction to hunting safety, duck calling and retriever training. The first 20 participants, ages 9-16, to register can participate in shooting training at Capital City Sporting Clays Range (12951 71st Ave. NE, Bismarck) the same day. The shooting training includes safe gun handling tips. Shooting activities will be held from 1-2:30 p.m. and 3-4:30 p.m. A parent or guardian must accompany children at the shooting range and during the clinic if the child is 9 years or younger.

Registration is required for the workshop. To sign up, contact Jennifer Kross at (701) 202-8896 or

Participants can also check out waterfowl hunting equipment and a trailer. The trailer and this year’s workshop are sponsored by DU and the North Dakota Game and Fish Department. North Dakota Game and Fish purchased the trailer with funds from the Encouraging Tomorrow’s Hunters special grant program, and Avery Outdoors donated the equipment.

Call DU’s Bismarck office at (701) 355-3500 to reserve one of three equipment packages: a fully equipped trailer with goose and duck decoys for field hunting or one of two bags of floating duck decoys and marsh seats for duck hunting on a wetland.
