Iowa Ducks Unlimited donors and area volunteers gathered Aug. 5 to celebrate an ongoing major wetland enhancement project and raise awareness for future conservation initiatives.

The Little Swan Lake enhancement project, a 545-acre wetland, includes a new water management system and carp barrier that transformed this shallow lake from open, turbid water to a healthy, clean water state with abundant natural wetland vegetation. The project will provide critical breeding and migration habitat for waterfowl and other wetland-dependent wildlife, and important recreational, water quality and societal benefits for Iowa residents. The Little Swan Lake project is a cooperative effort between Ducks Unlimited, several conservation organizations and numerous private landowners.

Following an afternoon at Little Swan Lake, attendees celebrated the many accomplishments achieved through the Living Lakes Initiative in Dickinson County. They enjoyed wine, appetizers and remarks from Ducks Unlimited Regional Biologist Mike Shannon.

A project dedication is scheduled for the Summer of 2018, an opportunity to recognize the many generous donors who helped support the restoration at Little Swan Lake. To conclude the evening, long-time volunteer and DU Major Donor Jon Kruse encouraged guests to join to support Ducks Unlimited through a major sponsorship.

Thanks to Ducks Unlimited donors and volunteers, the event raised more than $35,000 for wetland conservation.

"It brings a sense of joy to be a Ducks Unlimited Major Donor in knowing that we are aiding in the restoration of a wetland for all the wild creatures that use the wetland in their life cycle, while saving these resources for future generations to enjoy,” said event attendee Sheryl Paul.
