Petit Jean WMA - Blackland Moist-Soil Units

Petit Jean WMA
Blackland Moist-Soil Units

Purpose: To restore 183 acres of moist-soil wetlands on Petit Jean WMA through construction of external levees and installation of water control structures. In addition, a portable relift pump was purchased to provide a dependable source of water during periods of drought. These units will be flooded in late summer through early spring to provide adequate habitat during migration and wintering periods. Annual draw-downs will occur each spring to ensure adequate germination of high-energy seed producing vegetation. This project provides valuable foraging habitat to migrating and wintering waterfowl along the Petit Jean River. The project is within the Petit Jean Wildlife Management Area and is managed by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission to maintain high quality wetland habitat for waterfowl, while providing public hunting opportunities.
