The enhancement of 310 acres of wetland at Horicon Marsh State Wildlife Area in Dodge County is nearing completion. The contractor hired by DU completed core trenching and filling and stacking materials to build nearly 12,000 feet of levee in September. The material will be allowed to settle and dry until next year when final grading and the installation of five water control structures will occur. These improvements will allow managers to manipulate water levels to control over-abundant cattail and promote the growth of beneficial moist soil plants, which will provide improved habitat for waterfowl and other wildlife. Ducks Unlimited engineers provided the survey, design, and construction oversight for this project. Chaya Marsh is the third Wisconsin PRIDE project and a dedication is being planned for 2007/2008. Funding for this project is provided by Ducks Unlimited, Wisconsin DNR, North American Wetlands Conservation Council, Dr. Charles & Shirley Pechous, Ted & Grace Bachhuber Foundation, Marshall & Ilsley Foundation, and the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation.
