Ducks Unlimited is working with a private landowner to restore significant wetland habitat on the south side of Padilla Bay, just west of Mt. Vernon, Washington. The specific project site is located on the south side of Highway 20 adjacent to the Swinomish Channel. The project as proposed will include the restoration of both estuarine and freshwater wetland habitat on the site. Other partners in this project include the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Washington Salmon Recovery Funding Board. The project is presently in the "design phase" with construction tentatively scheduled for 2006 or 2007. The entire project could cost as much as $1 million. In addition to the partners listed above, DU has secured funding through a North American Wetlands Conservation Act grant. The project will provide excellent wintering and migration habitat for waterfowl. The estuarine component of the project will provide critical rearing habitat for juvenile salmon.
