Ducks Unlimited Verona Complex ready for young hunters this weekend

Lunch provided for youth waterfowl hunters

CLAY CENTER, NE, Sept. 23, 2009 - Ducks Unlimited’s Verona Complex is a great hunting spot for young hunters excited about participating in Nebraska’s special youth waterfowl hunting season this weekend, Sept. 26 and 27. The complex has special features just for youth hunters, and DU staff will be serving lunch to visiting young hunters on Saturday.

The 1,000 acre Verona Complex, in Nebraska’s Rainwater Basin, is visited by hundreds of thousands of migratory waterfowl each spring and fall. The complex, which was  restored by Ducks Unlimited, includes the Wolf North Tract, where only youths are allowed to hunt at any time of the year. Adults are encouraged to bring their younger hunters to the Wolf North Tract, but are not allowed to carry a gun themselves. The Verona Complex is located two miles north and 4 miles east of Clay Center.

The tract features a large, comfortable duck hunting blind in the wetland and an observation tower in the parking area for less strenuous wildlife viewing.  Also located on this tract is the newly dedicated “Fallen Heroes Memorial.” This monument commemorates the memory of those service men and women from Nebraska who have fallen in post 9-11 conflicts.

During this weekend’s youth-only waterfowl season, the entire Verona Complex will be open to youth waterfowl hunters. A lunch will be provided at the Wolf North Tract parking lot starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 26. Ducks Unlimited staff will be on hand to provide information about DU’s conservation efforts in the Rainwater Basin and the rest of Nebraska.

With more than a million supporters, Ducks Unlimited is the world's largest and most effective wetland and waterfowl conservation organization and has conserved more than 12 million acres. The United States alone has lost more than half of its original wetlands – nature's most productive ecosystem – and continues to lose more than 80,000 wetland acres important to waterfowl each year.
