Myrens Upland Project – Saskatchewan, Canada
October 4, 2009 – The Myren Uplands Project consists of Saskatchewan breeding grounds totaling 800 acres that is protected in perpetuity by Ducks Unlimited Canada. Nesting waterfowl flourish on its 175 acres of wetlands and 110 acres of native prairie. In addition, approximately 510 acres were cultivated lands, which DUC restored to native perennial cover in 1999. The restored area, situated within the Missouri Coteau, now supports waterfowl densities in excess of 50 pairs per square mile. The acreage is surrounded by an area of high wetland density and lies in close proximity to several other DU projects, only adding to its value.
Ten years after improvements began, the Myren Uplands Project was dedicated to a life-long conservationist from Louisiana. Dr. L. J. Mayeux, widely known across DU as “Dr. Duck” is a consummate example of the passion and commitment of the DU volunteer. He has held virtually every volunteer position in DU, starting as a Marksville, Louisiana committee member in 1980.
