MSU and Ducks Unlimited Educate the Next Generation of Conservationists

Ducks Unlimited (DU) partnered with Mississippi State University's College of Forest Resources  (CFR) to educate Summer Camp attendees about wetlands and waterfowl conservation and awarded each attendee a DU Greenwing membership. The Natural Resources Summer Camp, open to youth 14-17, is designed to help interested students explore career paths in the natural resources fields and to promote good stewardship of the environment.

Participants spend five days exploring the outdoors and learning about wildlife, fisheries, forestry, forest products, and natural resource conservation. CFR staff are joined by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Forest Service, Mississippi Forestry Commission, Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks and others in an effort to instill a passion for conservation in the students. This year, DU Communications Biologist, Andi Cooper attended an afternoon session to teach the students about wetlands conservation and DU.

Dr. Rick Kaminski, wildlife professor and interim associate dean of the CFR, helped coordinate the camp and said, “As our climate and our world change constantly, we must continue recruiting earthly-minded children into the ranks of natural resource conservation. DU’s Greenwing program is an excellent conduit for connecting children with wetlands, waterfowl and habitat conservation. We appreciate DU continuing to partner with Mississippi State University in our joint efforts in natural resources conservation.”
