DU initiated cooperation with the North American Wetlands Conservation Act Council, U.S. fish and Wildlife Service and other partners on this long-term landscape project in 21 south central South Dakota counties five years ago. Objectives of the project are to protect, restore, and enhance wetland and grassland habitats and create wetlands habitat in the large project area. Recent accomplishments by DU include; (1) creation of two wetlands covering 3 acres and 5 acres located in a large block of grassland on land owned by Mark White in Hand County, (2) restoration of three seasonal wetlands totaling 4 acres on private land owned by Charles Peterman in Hand County (these three small wetlands are situated near two larger brood-rearing wetlands and provide valuable waterfowl breeding pair habitat) and (3) creation of a 4-acre wetland on land owned by David Stagg adjacent to a State Game Production Area in Hyde County.
