GSL Wetlands Assessment Project II

For the past two fall seasons, researchers from Oregon State University have been sampling sago pondweed production at various sites on the Great Salt Lake. This effort is the first step to producing a fall waterfowl carrying capacity estimate for the Great Salt Lake's managed wetlands. however this project is twofold.

The Great Salt Lake is arguably the most important waterfowl hotspot in the Intermountain West. There are 35 species of waterfowl numbering between 3-4 million that annually utilize its diverse wetland ecosystem for migration and breeding.

Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area - Phragmites Control Project

One of the most pressing wetland conservation needs around the Great Salt Lake is the control of widespread infestations of invasive species, particularly common reed (Phragmites australis). Phragmites often has a synergistic relationship with carp and together a compounding negative effect on waterfowl populations and wetland habitat.

Utah Wetlands Initiative

Ducks Unlimited’s Utah Wetlands Initiative is the synthesis of all the wetlands and waterfowl conservation needs of the Great Salt Lake wetlands ecosystem. In May 2003, Ducks Unlimited held its annual National Convention in Salt Lake City and officially launched the Utah Wetlands Initiative.

UT Great Salt Lake Wetlands Assessment Project

Ducks Unlimited’s Great Salt Lake Wetlands Assessment Project is an integral component of the Utah Wetlands Initiative and has been underway since December 2004. The project’s goal is to ascertain how to sustain managed wetlands of the Great Salt Lake for waterfowl and other wildlife in light of increased urban demands for fresh water by assessing wetland habitat quality and quantity.

Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, Grassland Unit Restoration Project - Phase I

The Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge (Refuge) is one of the largest U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s National Wildlife Refuges in the Western United States and is managed specifically for waterfowl and other migratory waterbirds. Located on the vestigal Bear River delta, the Refuge provides habitat for millions of waterfowl and other migratory waterbirds.

Kays Creek Restoration

Ducks Unlimited, in conjunction with The Nature Conservancy (TNC), initiated work in 1999 to restore over 3,000 feet of the lowest segment of Kay’s Creek on TNC’s Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve. This project included redesigning the existing stream corridor to eliminate its channelization by adding an in-stream sub-floodplain, decreasing bank slope, and decreasing the overall channel slope.

Swaner Nature Preserve Restoration Project

The Swaner Nature Preserve is a unique piece of land encompassing over 750 acres near Kimball Junction, Utah. The Preserve has a history of grazing and haying, but at the expense of some of the rarest wetland types in Utah.

Great Salt Lake NAWCA, Phase II - Salt Creek Waterfowl Management Area Restoration Project

Ducks Unlimited, Inc., together with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) secured North American Wetland Conservation Act funds to restore degraded wetlands on the Salt Creek Waterfowl Management Area (WMA). DU Conservation Staff, with assistance from DWR, worked for over two years on this project with completion in the winter of 2002.

The Great Salt Lake Project, Phase I

Utah’s Great Salt Lake is the “Bird Crossroads of the Intermountain West” with its productive wetlands serving as a hub for migratory waterbirds in both the Pacific and Central Flyways. It is a designated a Western Hemispheric Shorebirds Reserve Network site not solely for this reason but because it is also home to the largest breeding colony of white pelicans and snowy plovers in the west, host to the largest migrating population of Wilson’s phalaropes in the west, resting area for thousands and thousands of pie-bill and eared grebes, gourmet kitchen for millions of other resident and migrating waterbirds, and more “best,” “biggest,” or “most” designations than many birder enthusiasts can keep straight.
