LAFAYETTE, La. – May 2, 2012 – The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is offering technical and financial assistance to agricultural producers in portions of 22 parishes to develop and enhance habitat for migrating birds.

Migratory Bird Habitat Initiative

In the summer of 2010, as the Deepwater Horizon disaster poured oil into the Gulf of Mexico, Ducks Unlimited, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation joined forces to provide alternative habitat for the millions of migratory birds that would soon wing their way to the Gulf Coast.

The 2012 Farm Bill is scheduled to be reauthorized next year, and depending on the outcome, this single piece of legislation will either positively or negatively impact millions of acres of wetlands, grasslands and other waterfowl habitat across the United States.

Ducks Unlimited Receives Highest Honor from USDA-NRCS

Ducks Unlimited has been awarded the Natural Resources Conservation Service's highest conservation honor for its exceptional work with the Migratory Bird Habitat Initiative. The initiative was created after last year's oil spill as a means to provide alternative habitat and foraging areas for waterfowl and other wetland-dependent wildlife.

Migratory Bird Habitat Initiative sheds light on critical habitat

One year ago, the deadly oil spill from British Petroleum’s Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico had Ducks Unlimited waterfowl biologists fearing the worst possible scenario – potentially millions of barrels of crude oil washing into an already threatened marsh habitat along Louisiana’s Coast.

Responding to the possible impacts of the Louisiana oil spill in June 2010, Ducks Unlimited, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and the Natural Resources Conservation Service partnered up to put habitat on the ground for migrating waterfowl and shorebirds.
