how to help

Rebuilding to The Top

It's not often Mary Ottley isn't thinking about her school's Ducks Unlimited Varsity Chapter. As the DU Area Chairman for the Collegiate School in Richmond, Virginia, Ottley takes every opportunity she has to spread the word about the group's fundraising efforts. After years of lower-than-expected attendance and interest in the area's high school operation, Ottley and a group of more than a dozen students rallied to rebuild the chapter; bringing in fresh ideas and a new energy. The work paid off and the DU Varsity chapter was ranked one of the top Varsity Chapters in the country.

Heeding the Call

Frank Heidelbauer could call a duck using just his throat. While growing up in South Dakota, he raised domesticated mallards and memorized their calls. When his voice changed at puberty, he tried to mimic ducks with the commercial calls that were available at the time but was disappointed by their sound.

South Carolina DU chapter honors Marine veterans

Each year in South Carolina, Ducks Unlimited's Beaufort Area chapter and local landowners host servicemen and women from the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort for a weekend hunt and dinner. The idea behind the event, which took place most recently in November 2015, is to connect the Lowcountry's waterfowling heritage, community, and military members.

Blue-Collar Texan Supports Waterfowl Breeding Landscapes

Mike Hruby is a decoy-carving, dog-loving, sea duck–hunting former bull rider and Marine. His fervor for waterfowling was ignited by his dad, who brought Mike to the blind for the first time when he was just six years old and tasked him with retrieving downed birds.

Investing In Ducks, Hunters, and Farmers

The Mosaic Company is one of the world's leading producers and marketers of concentrated phosphate and potash crop nutrients. As a DU Diamond Legacy Sponsor, Mosaic and its foundation have contributed more than $2 million to support conservation, making a significant commitment to improve nutrient management on agricultural lands and reduce impacts on wetlands.

President's Council Profile: Bob and Kitty Wilson

Bob Wilson loves the Rocky Mountains. After growing up in Iowa hunting ducks and pheasants along the Mississippi River, he ventured to Colorado for college in the 1960s and knew immediately that it would become his home. "It's Colorado, for heaven's sake," he says. "We have it all, from the prairies to the mountains. The weather is great. It's the good life."

First Bankcard

NFL Lineman Gives Back to Conservation and Community

On National Football League draft day in 2007, Joe Thomas was a first-round pick. But Joe, now an offensive tackle for the Cleveland Browns, wasn't among the other draftees in New York when he heard the news—he and his father were out enjoying a day of fishing on Lake Michigan.

Axalta and Ducks Unlimited Painting a Bright Future for Wetlands

As a major developer, manufacturer, and seller of industrial coatings in the United States and some 130 countries around the world, DU partner Axalta is in the business of protecting and conserving natural resources. Therefore, it is only fitting that Axalta focuses its corporate giving on water conservation and sustainability projects. In fact, Axalta recently committed to working with DU through 2020 as part of a $10 million wetlands conservation program.

Teen Launches Montana's First Varsity Chapter

Kai Krumwiede, the son of longtime Ducks Unlimited member and former Director of Development Layne Krumwiede, says it was around a campfire that he was issued a challenge to create Montana's first DU high school chapter. "It started at a hunting camp in Big Horn County," Kai recalls. "We were sitting around with a bunch of DU guys and they pretty much dared me to do it."

UGA Bulldogs for DU

University of Georgia Ducks Unlimited was named the number one collegiate chapter in Georgia last year, and their Area Chairman, Jay Weldon, credits that to passion for the DU mission, and maintaining year-round committee relationships.

Louisiana's First Varsity Chapter Bags Big Dollars for the Ducks

In 2005, Ducks Unlimited Varsity was introduced in high schools to offer students a way to merge school pride, leadership development, and a love for the outdoors and conservation. With nearly two dozen DU Varsity chapters already established across the country, 17-year-old Connor Gisclair was curious when he saw an ad about the program in Ducks Unlimited magazine. He and several of his friends from South Lafourche High School in Cut Off, Louisiana, are passionate about waterfowl hunting and Louisiana's marshes. So he made a call.

Conservation, the Economy, and You

Have you ever considered how much you personally contribute to the conservation cause, or how much your hunting expenditures benefit the economy? Let's take a closer look at the remarkable impact that a typical waterfowler has on conservation and the economy simply by doing two things that come naturally to many readers of this magazine: going duck hunting and supporting Ducks Unlimited.

2015 Artist of the Year

Growing up on his parents' Delaware farm, Richard Clifton could often be seen perched on a fence rail with a sketchbook in hand. But what had captured the attention of the future DU Artist of the Year wasn't a mallard or a pintail—at least not in the beginning. It was something much different but equally significant in the life of the young artist.

Ohio Couple Leaves a Legacy for Great Lakes Waterfowl

Hunting season usually finds John Cleek and his dedicated Labrador retriever, Van, pursuing waterfowl and upland game birds throughout Ohio and around Mitchell's Bay and Walpole Island on the eastern shore of Lake St. Clair. Later, John and his own father experienced their first duck hunt together in the same spot, over decoys borrowed from the Keeners. For John, that was the start of many hunting adventures and a lifelong commitment to conservation.
