Miss. lawmakers tour conservation easements, restoration projects

On May 30, DU policy staff from both the Southern Regional Office and the Governmental Affairs Office, in conjunction with Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks (MDWFP), hosted a conservation field tour for congressional staffers and others.

The tour participants included members of Senator Cochran’s and Senator Wicker’s staff, staff from the Senate Agriculture Committee, staff from the Mississippi Lieutenant Governor’s office, and a MDWFP Commissioner and former Delta Council president.

The group first stopped to tour a Wetland Reserve Program easement on private land, to learn about the process of restoring and implementing such an easement. The group then went to O’Keefe Wildlife Management Area, where they took an ATV tour, viewing North American Wetland Conservation Act projects designed and constructed by DU, a green tree area, and land owned by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, currently managed by MDWFP for cooperative agriculture and recreational waterfowl hunting use.
