In December 2012, Ducks Unlimited completed acquisition of the Brooks Tract, an important Platte River
habitat, from the Whooping Crane Trust. The 277-acre parcel is located in western Hall County near Shelton and is adjacent to Hannon Waterfowl Production Area (WPA), which is owned and managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS). With significant opportunities for wetland restoration and enhancement, DU Regional Biologist Jonas Davis and FWS Biologist Kirk Schroeder developed a wetland enhancement plan for the tract and WPA. Davis is currently working on grant proposals seeking partnership funding to implement the plan. Eventually DU intends to transfer the property to the FWS as an addition to Hannon WPA. Along with habitat benefits for waterfowl and other wildlife, the property provides ideal opportunities for public use, including hunting and bird watching.
