DU leaders push for NAWCA reauthorization in Washington

Senior DU board leaders were in Washington, D.C., this week to meet with top figures in the U.S. House of Representatives to support pending legislation that would reauthorize the North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA) through 2017. The bill, H.R. 1960, has had a hearing in the House Committee on Natural Resources and the next step is to consider possible amendments within the committee before sending the bill to the full House for further action.

Ten majority members of the House Natural Resources Committee have signed a letter asking that the bill be brought up. Concern exists because the congressional calendar for this fiscal year is winding down and the program will soon be in an "unauthorized" status.

Combined with the push from leadership this week, efforts from DU staff and volunteers will continue to let Congress know how effective and important NAWCA is to the North American waterfowl resource, and based on its track record of success, that it deserves renewal.
