Ducks Unlimited voices support for water plan in Great Lakes

Ducks Unlimited Inc. and Ducks Unlimited Canada recently submitted a joint letter to the International Joint Commission, expressing support for Plan BV7, a water-level-management plan designed to more closely replicate natural hydrology on the St. Lawrence River and in Lake Ontario.

"Water management in the past did not really take the seasonal highs and lows into account," said Becky Humphries, director of Ducks Unlimited's Great Lakes and Atlantic region. "This plan, based on science, will improve water levels for public and private interests. It will also begin to restore some of the wetlands and shorelines that have suffered from previous management practices."

Plan BV7 regulates the movement of water through the Moses-Saunder Dam and the St. Lawrence River, and thus the water level of Lake Ontario. This new water management plan will benefit coastal habitats and species in New York and Ontario, as well as generating positive economic benefits in coastal communities.
