Ducks Unlimited joins other conservation, sportsmen's groups in support of Sodsaver

In a letter submitted this week, hunting and fishing and conservation groups urged House Agriculture Committee Chairman Frank Lucas (OK) and ranking member Collin Peterson (MN) to adopt the Farm Bill's Sodsaver provision to promote "responsible stewardship of agricultural land and direct program benefits to acreage that is most suited for crop production."

Ducks Unlimited signed the letter alongside approximately 30 other groups, including the American Sportfishing Association, Izaak Walton League of America, National Wildlife Federation, Pheasants Forever and Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership.

Sodsaver is of particular significance to DU's conservation work, as the provision is aimed at protecting native grasslands from being converted to cropland in high-risk landscapes such as the Prairie Pothole Region of North and South Dakota.

The Senate farm bill approved by the Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee on April 26 includes a Sodsaver provision sponsored by Sen. John Thune (SD) and Mike Johanns (NE). While the time table for action in the House is still uncertain, DU and its partners are working aggressively in the House to make sure Agriculture Committee members know how important the Sodsaver provision is to DU's conservation mission.
