NEW ORLEANS – May 2, 2012 – The 2012 Louisiana Ducks Unlimited State Convention will be held at the Hilton Riverside Hotel in New Orleans, July 19-21.
"As Ducks Unlimited is celebrating 75 years of conservation success this year, we have made special plans to ensure this is a particularly memorable state convention, and I encourage everyone to attend," said Robert T. Garrity Jr., Louisiana DU state chairman.
The Hilton Riverside is located within walking distance of New Orleans' historic French Quarter and Warehouse District. The French Quarter offers, museums, shopping and restaurants galore. The Warehouse District is home to more wonderful restaurants, the Louisiana Children's Museum and a World War II museum. Other local attractions include the Audubon Zoo, Aquarium of the Americas, Riverwalk shopping, walking tours, steamboat tours on the river and all the fabulous convention activities—it will be a weekend to remember.
"I am looking forward to celebrating this special anniversary year with all of my fellow volunteers and having a wonderful time in historic New Orleans," Garrity said.
Thursday evening will open with a cocktail reception on the Mark Twain Patio overlooking the Mississippi River. In addition to convention meetings, Friday will include Louisiana DU's world-famous annual Road Kill Cook-Off with DU chapters from across Louisiana, other states and Canada all vying for the coveted Golden Armadillo trophy. A special children's tour, "Behind the Scenes at the Aquarium of the Americas," has been arranged Saturday morning for youth attending the convention with their families. Saturday will culminate with a banquet including raffles and silent and live auctions.
Louisiana is home to five of DU's nationally recognized President's Elite chapters and five Top 100 chapters. Louisiana has a strong history of support for Ducks Unlimited and usually ranks within the top five fundraising states nationally. In 2011, Louisiana DU chapters included about 17,000 members statewide and raised $1.8 million in grassroots funds to support DU's conservation efforts across North America.
