North Carolina DU announces First Annual Carver/Decoy of the Year Championship

Event to be held at NCDU State Convention on Aug. 18, 2012
North Carolina Ducks Unlimited invites the public to participate in the First Annual North Carolina Ducks Unlimited "Carver of the Year/Decoy of the Year" Championship to be held at the North Carolina State Convention on August 18, 2012, in Wilmington, NC.
Now in its 75th year, Ducks Unlimited's vision of "wetlands sufficient to fill the skies with waterfowl today, tomorrow and forever" still holds true, and North Carolina DU wants artists to help promote that vision and celebrate our waterfowling heritage by using their skills to depict a selected waterfowl species in woodcarvings and paint. Our "Carver of the Year" category uses IWCA Working Decoy rules to showcase a combination of function and art in a working decoy. The species this year is the elegant Drake Pintail. The North Carolina "Gunning Decoy of the Year" will be a Drake Redhead. This category reflects the heritage of traditional style decoys carved in an old "Down East" work shed and hunted over in the rivers and sounds of North Carolina. These dekes were typically "bliond" (no eyes), but if they could talk, they would surely have some stories to tell.

Judging will take place in conjunction with the banquet reception on Saturday night at the Wilmington Convention Center along the Cape Fear River. The Best of Show winners will receive a purchase award and recognition at the banquet along with the notoriety of being the "First Annual NCDU Carver/Decoy of the Year." The 1st place Best of Show decoy in both Divisions will be sold at live auction that night.

The competitions are open to all interested individuals. Click here to view and download the NCDU 1st Annual Carver/Decoy of the Year Contest invitation and the complete contest rules in PDF format.

We also wish to extend an invitation to all to our entire State Convention beginning on Thursday August 16th with plenty of activities leading up to the banquet on Saturday night.
