MEMPHIS, Tenn. – March 27, 2012 – The 3rd Annual Ducks Unlimited Pigs In Flight BBQ Competition is coming to DU's national headquarters in Memphis on March 29-31, hosted by Midtown Electric, Cummins Mid South, Drake Waterfowl and Memphis Area Toyota Dealers.
Fifty barbecue teams will compete to take home $10,000 in prize money. But the Pigs In Flight volunteers have a few special highlights in store for attendees this year, including the shooting of an episode of "BBQ Pitmasters" and an all-new Friday-night oyster roast and live concert event open to the public. Greg Lackey and Kings of the Delta will provide the evening's entertainment.
"We're thrilled to be hosting 'BBQ Pitmasters' and recognize that this event will be a great opportunity to showcase Ducks Unlimited and Memphis barbecue on a national scale," said Tal Goldsby, event chairman. "Our competition will feature some of the best barbecue cooks in the world, as well as raising money for the world's leading wetlands conservation organization—it's a win-win for the Memphis barbecue community and DU alike."
Throughout the three-day event, Drake Waterfowl will be hosting a massive sidewalk sale featuring outdoor and casual clothing for outdoorsmen and women, as well as various types of hunting gear.
"Last year's event was a great success, but like any DU event, the Pigs In Flight volunteer committee is always looking to raise the bar," said Will Johnson, DU manager of grassroots promotions and Pigs In Flight committee member. "Because this is a unique event, there isn't really a standard to compare it to. That being said, for the past several years, Pigs In Flight has strived to be the standard by which all barbecue events are judged—we certainly feel it's one of the best in the Mid-south."
This year's event sponsors include Drake Waterfowl, Cummins Mid South, Memphis Area Toyota Dealers, Mid Town Electric, Mahaffey Tent & Party Rentals, Agricenter International, Budweiser of Memphis, Adams Grease Service, Trybe Targeting, West Memphis Fence and Perfection 10 Promotions.
