Barkley Lake WMA - Duck Island Enhancement

Purpose: To enhance 400 acres of waterfowl habitat on Duck Island. The initial project was completed in 1987, but the wetlands engineering failed. The lake overtopped containment dikes, resulting in several levee breaks and damaged water control structures. The goal of Phase II was to repair 3,200 feet of levee and replace 3 water control structures. A combination of natural vegetation and agricultural foods will be planted and flooded during waterfowl migration periods. Duck Island is managed by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources and serves as a refuge for wintering waterfowl.

Location: The project is located on Duck Island in Trigg County approximately 27 miles southeast of Paducah, KY.

Acres Impacted: 400 acres

Habitat Types: Moist-soil Wetlands
Flooded Agricultural Crops

Ducks Unlimited, Inc.
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

Timeline: Phase I was completed in December 1987
