DU-supported proposition on Texas water funding passes by large margin

Proposition 6, the Texas constitutional amendment on water funding supported by Ducks Unlimited, passed with more than 70 percent of the vote in the Nov. 5 statewide elections. Prop 6 will provide $2 billion in onetime funding for Texas Water Plan projects from the state's Rainy Day Fund.

DU leaders have identified water quantity and quality as critical issues facing waterfowl and wetlands in Texas. In 2011, Texas suffered the worst single-year drought in the state's history, and drought conditions continue today. The extended drought has impacted fish, wildlife and natural resources, but also communities, businesses, the energy industry, agricultural production, local and state economies and all Texans.

DU believes Prop 6 is a strong start for a long-term remedy to water shortages in Texas, and the successful vote will implement HB 4 (the water bill supported by DU), providing $2 billion in rotating bond funding for water, of which 20 percent must go to water conservation funding and 10 percent to funding rural and agricultural water conservation projects, both of which are important to Texas waterfowl.

DU thanks our members and supporters for voting and for supporting water, waterfowl and wetlands.
