On a sunny evening in June 2006, Ducks Unlimited (DU) staff and volunteers gathered with other conservation partners, including the Ohio Division of Wildlife and Pheasants Forever, to dedicate the Horvat Wetland and Grassland Restoration project at Mosquito Creek Wildlife Area in Trumbull County. In partnership with the Division of Wildlife, DU restored 58 acres of wetlands and Pheasants Forever restored 150 acres of grasslands on a 496-acre tract, which was acquired just a few years ago with assistance from these and other partners.
Ducks Unlimited engineers surveyed and designed the project, hired the contractor, and provided construction management during the wetland restoration, which was completed in 2005. The Division will manage this complex to provide high quality waterfowl nesting habitat adjacent to shallow water wetland habitat. This wetland type is one of the most valuable habitat components for threatened and endangered wetland wildlife and will provide important breeding and migration habitat for waterfowl and shorebirds.
Several DU officials, including State Chairman Elect John Murphy, as well as dozens of local DU volunteers, attended the dedication. The Mahoning Valley Chapter of DU made a significant contribution toward this project in memory of their former Committee Chairman Dan Gilboy. Visitors to Mosquito Creek can view the Horvat wetland complex from an observation deck on the Greenway Bike Path.
