All a mobile hunter needs to quickly create an effective blind is a pair of hand tree pruners. Find a dense clump of bushes at the water's edge and prune an opening in the middle for you and your dog. Remove branches that may block your swing while shooting and prune holes in the front to look out.

Opening Day | Hunting Photo Contest Winner
Congratulations to George Clifford!
Fredericton, New Brunswick, resident George Clifford took this photo of a friend's 10-year-old yellow Labrador retriever and won first place in DU's Opening Day Hunting Photo Contest. George, who took the shot when he and Dodger were waiting for another wave of ducks to fly overhead while hunting in Prince Edward Island, said Dodger is a "seasoned veteran who won't leave a duck in the water and doesn't show his age at the blind." For his win, George will receive the DU Northwinds Jacket and Bib, courtesy of Whitewater.

Agricultural conservation programs are good for farmers, hunters, and business
When most of us think of the Farm Bill, the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) immediately comes to mind. We also think about how this program helps increase duck populations and can put more birds over our decoy spreads. CRP pays farmers to restore perennial grass cover on marginal cropland under 10- or 15-year contracts, providing valuable habitat for nesting ducks, upland game birds, and a variety of other wildlife. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) estimate that prairie croplands enrolled in CRP raise 30 percent more ducks than do landscapes without the additional upland cover this program provides.

Smoky Maple Duck or Goose Breast |

| Ingredients |
- 1 cup Tender Quick salt or other curing salt
- 4 cups cold water
- 3-4 boneless skinless duck breasts
- 1 bottle pure maple syrup
- Cajun or Creole seasoning
- Brown sugar

| Cooking Instructions |
- Dissolve the curing salt in the water in a bowl. Add the duck and turn to coat. Marinate in the refrigerator overnight.
- Drain and discard marinade. Rinse the duck with cold water and pat dry with paper towels.
- Pour most of the maple syrup into a meat injector. Inject evenly into the duck. Rub the remaining maple syrup over the duck.
- Mix Cajun or Creole seasoning and brown sugar in a bowl. Rub evenly over the duck.
- Prepare a smoker using the manufacturer's instructions. Add the duck to the smoker and smoke for 2-4 hours or to medium rare. Remove the duck to a cutting board and slice.
