Frozen North: Minnesota
One of the most unique and successful fundraising projects to hit DU's grassroots scene is the focus of this month's Chapter Spotlight. However, that success resulted from the work of not just one DU chapter, but from 12 chapters. Nearly all of the DU chapters in northern Minnesota collborated to hold what is called a calendar raffle, and Scott Anderson, regional director for northern Minnesota and chairman of the fundraiser, said the collective effort from this group of chapters raised so much money for the ducks that the 2012 campaign has already begun.

Retrieving Geese
Training dogs to retrieve and carry a heavy goose can be difficult. To give your dog some practice, try using a weighted dummy. To do this, take a plastic dummy, slit the bottom, add sand or lead sinkers, tape the bottom shut. As your dog becomes more comfortable carrying a heavy load, gradually increase the weight of the dummy until you're confident your dog can handle the heft of a goose. To permanently seal the dummy, use plastic cement that is available at most hardware stores.

Spring on the Prairies
 Early waterfowl biologists called the Prairie Pothole Region of the United States and Canada the "Duck Factory" because of its incredible productivity for breeding waterfowl. Dotted with millions of small "pothole" wetlands, this region remains this continent's most important waterfowl breeding ground. In especially wetland-rich areas, duck breeding densities can exceed 100 pairs per square mile. Following is a visual tour of the prairies and why it's so important to conserve this region's wetlands and grasslands for waterfowl and other wildlife.

Conservation Funding in Jeopardy
Encourage your elected officials to protect duck populations across the continent.
 The North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA) has been an essential part of Ducks Unlimited's conservation effort for 20 years. Unfortunately, this vital program's future is now in severe jeopardy due to a proposal to eliminate all funding.
Some of you have responded to earlier requests to contact your senators and members of Congress to seek support of the NAWCA program. While DU support has helped protect NAWCA from further budget cuts in the temporary FY2011 measures that have kept the government running for these last few weeks, these measures expire on Friday, April 8, and NAWCA's future will once again be threatened.

Patience is certainly a virtue when training a young dog
 "Timing is everything in retriever training," says Chris Akin of Webb Footed Kennels in Bono, Arkansas. Akin has trained more than 4,000 retrievers in his 20-plus-year career. By design, he favors a go-slow approach with young dogs. The proof is in the results. Included among his former canine students are more than 100 grand champions and master hunters, titles that are not attainable without a keen understanding of a dog's mindset.
"Dog training in a nutshell is turning a negative into a positive," Akin says. "The first thing you have to do is make sure the dog knows what you are asking it to do. If that's not clear, you're setting yourself up for problems."

The Jack Daniel's Single Barrel brand asked consumers to submit a story about their Chocolate Lab and what made it so special. The story submitted by the owners of "Bud" struck a special chord with the judges who were unanimous in the selection as 2011 "Dog of the Year."
