Irrigation project to restore popular
waterfowl, wildlife area in Arkansas
One of Arkansas' most valued public lands is set to receive extensive upgrades designed to restore habitat for wintering waterfowl. The Bayou Meto Basin Irrigation Project in Arkansas received $37 million in federal stimulus money that, when coupled with $20.2 million in state funds, will allow work to begin on pump stations. Gulf Coast Joint Venture study says Gulf Coast marshes losing ability to support waterfowl
Gulf Coast Joint Venture (GCJV) scientists recently completed analyses demonstrating that massive losses of coastal wetlands during the past half-century have reduced the capacity of Gulf Coast marshes to support wintering waterfowl. Potential impacts of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill to marsh vegetation and food production mean waterfowl may encounter even greater food shortages when they arrive on the Gulf Coast later this year. House officials about Prairie Pothole Region
Late last week, Dale Hall, DU's CEO; John Tomke, chairman of Wetlands America Trust's governmental affairs committee; Eric Washburn, DU friend and supporter, and Scott Sutherland, director of DU's Governmental Affairs Office in Washington, D.C., met with Sally Ericsson, associate director for Natural Resources Programs at the White House Office of Management and Budget, and Will Shafroth, deputy assistant secretary of the Interior, to advocate the inclusion of the Prairie Pothole Region in the administration's America's Great Outdoors initiative.
