DU in D.C.: Conservation Reserve Program opened to haying, grazing

With drought conditions leading to record grain prices, the USDA has agreed to open select Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) acres to haying and grazing to help alleviate the burden on America's ranchers. The acres would not be open during waterfowl nesting seasons, and the move will make CRP more attractive to farmers and ranchers who might otherwise cultivate the land in these times of high commodity prices.

Waterfowl Production Areas celebrate 50 years

Consisting of more than 36,000 areas ranging from .01 acres to more than 7,400 acres, WPAs are responsible for conserving more than 2.5 million acres of waterfowl habitat.

Ducks Unlimited, the leader in wetland habitat conservation, acknowledges the purchase of 187,000 acres of Everglades by the state of Florida as a significant milestone in conservation. Acquired by the state from U.S. Sugar Corporation, the $1.7 billion purchase is crucial to the South Florida wetland ecosystem.
