Bug Out

We have several wood duck boxes mounted on steel poles on a pond in northern Minnesota. We used to clean out the houses in late summer after the ducklings had left. We changed our minds after discovering hornet or wasp nests inside some of the boxes. Now we empty and put fresh sawdust in them just before ice-out. We have continued to get excellent wood duck use from our boxes without having any insect problems."

Big-water Action on Small Ponds

In a perfect world, all waterfowl hunters would have thousands of acres of flooded timber or marsh to hunt; unfortunately, very few have that opportunity. The good news is the sometimes overlooked small-water honey holes can produce great hunts across the country, from Florida to Washington state, for those willing to put in the effort, the time scouting, and be prepared to take the bad days with the good.

Secretary Kempthorne reappoints Alan Wentz to North American Wetlands Conservation Council

In a first for the world leader in wetlands conservation, a senior Cabinet official addressed the Ducks Unlimited National Convention, being held in Baltimore, Md. "Everything Ducks Unlimited does is world-class," said Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne, addressing more than 900 Ducks Unlimited members, volunteers and staff at DU's National Convention in Baltimore.

DU Success: Regional Project Highlights

Ducks Unlimited to restore thousands of acres of habitat in Nebraska's Rainwater Basin

Ducks Unlimited will soon restore more than 1,000 acres of native grasslands and wetlands in Nebraska's Rainwater Basin. DU announced today it will receive $153,641 from the Nebraska Environmental Trust for the Rainwater Basin Habitat Restoration Project.
