Know Your Ducks
So, you think your waterfowl IQ is pretty sharp? See if you can identify the name of the waterfowl species with following traits:
- I have a chestnut red head and neck, a black breast, grayish back, black rump, and blackish brown tail (drake).
- My iris is bright red in the spring, but duller in the winter.
- I breed in the prairie pothole region of North America.
- I historically wintered in the Chesapeake Bay area, but with the recent loss of submerged aquatic vegetation in the bay, my range has shifted south towards the lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley.

| The North American Grasslands Conservation Initiative
The grasslands of North America are the world's best waterfowl breeding habitat. This mix of shallow ponds surrounded by native grasses attracts millions of breeding waterfowl each year. Today, less than one quarter of our original prairie grassland remains, and what is left is under imminent threat of destruction. Despite such dramatic habitat loss, the prairies of North America still provide the most important habitat for nesting waterfowl.
