What is a “Legacy Greenwing?”

The Legacy Greenwing program is a bridge between Ducks Unlimited’s conservation and youth programs. Open to youth up to age 21, Legacy Greenwings receive a magazine (either Puddler or Ducks Unlimited depending on their age until they turn 21), membership card, decal, and specially designed pin.

Most important, with a $200 Legacy Greenwing membership, those funds are committed to a waterfowl habitat project on the wintering grounds here in Mississippi, and your child or grandchild’s name appears on a bronze plaque located at the project site. Your child is forever linked to Ducks Unlimited’s central mission of waterfowl and wetlands habitat conservation.

The Trimcane Legacy Greenwing Project
In Honor of Andy Morris, Lifetime DU Volunteer

Location:
The Trimcane Project is located in Oktibbeha County approximately 5 miles north of Starkville, MS. The project is located in the clay hills of eastern Mississippi, an area known for hosting a diverse suite of birds migrating through the Mississippi flyway.

Description: The site incorporates 840 acres of bottomland hardwoods, moist soil, and other habitats, including 220 acres of wetlands. The purpose of the project is to restore the area to a functioning wetland through the construction of moist soil habitats for the benefit of wintering waterfowl. The completion of levees and water control structures, including seven impoundments will provide maximum benefits to waterfowl.

Partners:
Ducks Unlimited has partnered with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, Mississippi State University, and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service to restore and further develop the wetlands on Trimcane Wildlife Management Area (WMA).

Waterfowl Benefits: The hydrology and habitat improvements at the Project will continue to provide essential food and cover for waterfowl. Proper water management will ensure increased benefits to ducks and geese. Duck species observed at Trimcane and surrounding area include mallard, blue- and green-winged teal, wood duck, gadwall, northern pintail, lesser scaup and northern shoveler, as well as Canada geese.

Other Wildlife Benefits: Many species of wildlife benefit from Ducks Unlimited’s habitat projects. At Trimcane, bird species observed using the project include red-tailed hawk, great blue heron, American bittern, killdeer, dove, and numerous songbirds. White-tailed deer and turkey also benefit from the project.

Project Funding: The first 100 Legacy Greenwing memberships in Mississippi will fund a portion of DU’s $108,000 financial commitment to this project and will help leverage additional partner dollars. Mississippi Ducks Unlimited will work to combine this with other fundraising efforts to finalize the Project.

Would you like to have your child or grandchild’s name cast in a bronze plaque at the Trimcane Project in Starkville, MS, and know that the wetlands restored and protected there will provide important habitat for waterfowl and wildlife for future generations?
Deadline for inclusion in this project is April 15, 2008.
