Outstanding contributions to wetlands and waterfowl conservation recognized
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – March 26, 2010 – South Dakota Senator John Thune has been announced as the recipient of a 2010 Wetland Conservation Achievement Award from Ducks Unlimited.
The award was presented at the 75th-annual North American Wildlife and Natural Resources Conference at the Hilton Milwaukee City Center in Milwaukee, Wis., on Friday, March 26.
"It is a pleasure working with Ducks Unlimited to promote good conservation practices like the Conservation Reserve Program and Sodsaver," said Sen. Thune. "Thank you for the award and for all of the good work that Ducks Unlimited has done on the ground in South Dakota."
"Senator Thune has demonstrated a commitment to protecting the Prairie Pothole Region for many years," said Scott Sutherland, DU director of governmental affairs. "During this time, Senator Thune has contributed immensely to advancing one of the conservation community's top Farm Bill priorities—Sodsaver. Specifically, in 2007, Senator Thune played a critical role in advancing the inclusion of Sodsaver in the Farm Bill reauthorization."
"Through his continued resolute commitment and dedication to conservation, he has helped protect essential waterfowl habitat in one of the most critical waterfowl production areas in North America," said Sutherland.
DU's Wetland Conservation Achievement Awards are presented in six categories and recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the restoration and conservation of North America's wetlands and waterfowl.
Ducks Unlimited is the world's largest non-profit organization dedicated to conserving North America's continually disappearing waterfowl habitats. Established in 1937, Ducks Unlimited has conserved nearly 13 million acres thanks to contributions from more than a million supporters across the continent. Guided by science and dedicated to program efficiency, DU works toward the vision of wetlands sufficient to fill the skies with waterfowl today, tomorrow and forever.
