Ducks Unlimited’s Verona Complex in Nebraska is open to public hunting. Verona is located 45 minutes southeast of Grand Island in Clay County and no permit or fee is required to hunt this property. However, users of the property are required to follow the rules and regulations posted for the area as well as possess appropriate state hunting licenses. Regulations are posted at each of the parking areas on the property and they can be downloaded (PDF) from the DU website.

According to Ducks Unlimited Land Manager Tim Horst, hunting opportunities at Verona will be plentiful this hunting season. “I have seen a significant number of pheasants this year and a good amount of prairie chickens. If water conditions continue to improve and when temperatures start to drop, we should see the duck numbers pick up.”

Species that can be hunted on the Verona Complex include – squirrel, cottontail, jackrabbit, mourning dove, snipe, Virginia rail, Sora rail, grouse, woodcock, bobwhite quail, cock pheasant, partridge, raccoon, opossum, ducks, geese, coot, mergansers, prairie chicken and white-tailed deer. DU prohibits hunting of snow geese during the spring season and prairies dogs on this property.

Hunters must abide by all Nebraska Game and Parks Commission hunting laws, regulations and seasons. The Wolf North Tract (tract #1) is reserved for youth only hunting. Adults accompanying youths in this area may not posses a firearm. DU asks that visitors to Verona respect the property and other hunters by not littering and avoiding livestock that may be present on the area.

Ducks Unlimited permits public access on specified lands owned by the organization. Most properties are part of a Revolving Land Strategy and held for a short term. Accessibility to these properties is subject to change. Once DU sells a property, access to the land will be at the discretion of the new landowner. DU does not reserve special hunting or other privileges for anyone.
