Ducks Unlimited has a five-year contract with the Colorado Division of Wildlife to raffle off one of the division’s moose tags. This tag, sometimes referred to as a “Governor’s Tag,” is highly sought after because, not only can you use it in any open unit or season, it does not count as your once-in-a-lifetime draw. With this contract, Ducks Unlimited gets to keep some of the proceeds from the raffle.
Last year, the raffle was held at the Colorado State Convention in Denver. A ticket was drawn in front of the highly charged audience. It was handed to Kirk Davidson, who immediately started dialing the winner’s cell phone number. As Dr. Al Larson answered the other end of the line, he was more than a little elated at the news. The audience got to experience Al’s reaction, as Kirk put the call on speaker-phone
Al was one lucky duck as he made a total purchase of $200 in tickets at both the Evergreen and Golden banquets. Al contacted Scott Lemmer of Comanche Wilderness Outfitters and a hunt was set for early September. Al’s goal was to take a moose with his 54 caliber Hawkins-style muzzleloader. The hunt was to take place in northwestern Larimer County near the headwaters of the Poudre River.
On the scouting expedition, Al got to witness his bull spar with a lesser bull not 50 yards away. This only fueled his excitement. The next morning Al stalked the bull and his 54 caliber did the trick. Now Al is headed into the Longhunter Records, His bull ranked #10 for a North American Shiras scoring 157 3/8 with a 48” spread.
“This has been a hugely rewarding experience for me,” Al said, “doubly so, that it benefits the Ducks as well.” His trophy will be proudly displayed in his cabin in Clark Colorado.
