Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge Wetland Enhancement at Track 23, cells 1,4 and 6 in Glen County
The project site is owned and operated by the US
Fish and Wildlife Service
as part of the
Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge Complex
. The project totals 84 acres and will enhance seasonal wetlands by removing and rehabilitating existing levees and creating pond bottom relief. This tract has deteriorated in quality with invasive vegetation limiting waterfowl use and
water management capabilities
. Existing levees require rehabilitation and some need to be removed entirely. A series of channels and potholes will diversify the unit to provide improved wintering waterfowl habitat and
water management capabilities
. This project will include the reconstruction of 1 mile of perimeter levee, the removal of 0.25 miles of existing interior levee, excavating channels and potholes and creating loafing islands. This tract is used as a seasonal wetland to provide
summer water management
, wintering waterfowl habitat and is located in the spaced blind portion of the public hunt area. This work is in the refuge's public hunting area where improved waterfowl habitat should contribute to improved hunter opportunity.
