You could call it “duck hunt in a can.” Ducks Unlimited, North Dakota Game and Fish and Avery Outdoors are partnering to make it easier for young people to go on their first hunt. North Dakota families with young hunters can now checkout a trailer in Bismarck full of decoys and blinds to hunt waterfowl.

“We want to encourage kids and their parents or other adults to get out and experience the spectacle of waterfowl hunting for themselves,” said Scott Stephens, DU director of conservation programs. “We’re trying to eliminate the obstacle of having to purchase large amounts of equipment to try waterfowl hunting.”

Families with young hunters can checkout one of three equipment packages, which are located in Bismarck. Calling DU’s Bismarck office at 701-355-3500, they can reserve a fully equipped trailer with goose and duck decoys for field hunting or one of two bags of floating ducks decoys and marsh seats for duck hunts in a wetland.

“The equipment needed to hunt waterfowl can sometimes be expensive and may discourage families from trying to hunt,” said Pat Lothspeich, outreach biologist with the North Dakota Game and Fish Department.

Money for purchasing the trailer was provided by the Game and Fish Department’s Encouraging Tomorrow’s Hunters special grant program, which was developed to enhance the recruitment of the next generation of hunters.

Avery Outdoors contributed the blinds and marsh seats, along with deeply discounted pricing on the decoys for this project.

“Avery does its best to contribute to conservation, waterfowl and the future of hunting,” said Tyson Keller, with Avery Outdoors. “Since youth are a predominant future face of waterfowl hunting, Avery was eager to be involved with this great opportunity.”

Avery, DU and Game and Fish have partnered for the last couple of years on a Youth Waterfowl Hunting Clinic held in September.

“I am confident that the State of North Dakota and DU will impact the lives of many young hunters and help further the hunting tradition with the youths involved,” Keller said.
