Hey guys, my name is Joe and I'm very new to waterfowling.  I've really only hunted upland game birds and this year I'm planning on doing a little duck and goose hunting.

I need to buy a set of waders and I'm pretty settled on the 1600 super mags from cabelas, my question then I guess is this: what do I need to wear when I try them on?  Are they supposted to be form fitting?  When I observe others in the field their legs look like the neoprene is skin tight, do people wear anything besides underwear when they wear waders?

I should explain that I'm from northern Illinois (Chicago suburbs) so our winters get very brutal.  I'm interested in investing in wool bibs from Filson or LL Bean.  Is it unheard of to wear wool bibs underneath waders to keep warm?

Thanks a ton,

Joe

I am from upstate New York so we have about the same weather. I wear a pair of fleece wader pants under my waders once the weather cools. During the Sept. and early Oct. seasons I wear thin nylon pants. I have friends that wear shorts during the early season but have never seen anybody just wear underwear.

Definetly go with fleece wander pants during the cold weather.  1600 gram will be down right sweaty in early season.

i try to buy mine a little bigger for some extra layers i live in north dakota and have had ice form around me in the morning and by 10am im roasting to death. 1600 will keep you warm but like stated it can be alittle to warm in early season but if you can deal with that its worth it come november the fleece wader pants are a good investment too since the have straps to go under your feet to keep them from riding up your leg.

Boosh,

You want to leave some room for additional clothing layers. I wore them with just shorts and a tee shirt last weekend during early teal season but during the dead of winter I often wear multiple layers of clothes under them.
