Hey guys, planned our first trip to White lake, ontario for next fall. About 60km west of ottawa. We plan on freelancing, and understand that ontario isn't the mecca for ducks and geese like saskatchawa or alberta, but plan on trying to make the best of it. I have done a lot of research on getting into canada with guns, dogs, gear, etc., but would really appreciate any helpful advice on our venture.

Standard Stuff-you need a passport-need to fill out paperwork on each firearm and pay the fee on entry and you need it when you exit as well.. All the info is on the net, all you have to do is download it and fill out the forms. You will pay customs on AMMO if you take in a certain amount over their maximum and you better declare it, never't lie or mislead them or otherwise give them a reason for detaining you.

If taking a dog you need to go to the vet within 10 days of departure and get a health check and a transportation form, I also have the vet fill out the complete shot record for the last 12 months.

Can't take back to the US more than the possession limit on any waterfowl, make sure you have them properly tagged and one wing is left on for identification. If you don't do this they will confiscate your birds.

Most of the time I have been treated with dignity and respect by customs officers and game wardens who will occasionally check you as you depart for the US. By the way, you will fill out a form on departure that tells the species of birds you killed and numbers. Make sure that number is exactly what you have in your cooler-never take anybody elses birds back and remember they must be tagged.

However, I have also run into some real jerks at the departure area in the Winnipeg Airport. One time they asked me questions that had I not answered them correctly, I am sure they would have detained me. Careful how you answer questions, usually yes or no is fine.

Enjoy!
