is there such a thing as training too soon? i know you have to teach obediance to the pup first but is there a certain time that i should wait to start training the pup to be a gun dog? i dont want to start him to early and make it so that its not fun for the dog or make him not want to do it. just wondering when a good time to start is.

You can (and should) start training the day you pick up the pup from the breeder. Buy Jackie Mertens' video Sound Beginnings. It will guide you from day 1 puppy stuff until you are ready to start Basic OB which is around 6 months. You can find it here:

The Jackie Mertens DVD is great, it helps with puppy obedience and introducing concepts. I am working with some pups that are 5 months old doing 175 - 225 yard marks. The key with marks is to stop before the pup gets bored, you want them leaving the field wanting one more mark.
